SALISBURY 150 YEARS OLD - STILL SETTING STANDARDS
Appearing in catalogs, advertising and logos since the early part of the 20 th century, Salisbury now reaches 150 years of continuous service.
Established in 1855 when Chicago was little more than a frontier town, a small store opened that dealt exclusively in rubber goods. The early part of the 20 th century saw the rise in maintenance of electrical distribution, which led Salisbury to develop and manufacture many of the rubber safety products still used by utility line workers and contractors.
Today, Salisbury is setting standards in the industrial marketplace by offering the most complete selection of arc flash and arc flash related products. From protective clothing to tools, to complete kits including arc flash clothing, electrical insulating gloves and storage products to maximize the life of the equipment.
Still going strong at 150 years. Salisbury – setting industry standards since 1855.

Saft Receives Double Honors from Frost & Sullivan: 2005 Battery Company of the Year Award and 2005 Award for Technology Innovation
2005 awards presented to Saft for excellence in the industrial battery arena
Saft announced it has received the 2005 Battery Company of the Year Award for excellence in the industrial battery arena from Frost & Sullivan. The company received the award based on various factors including the company’s business development, competitive strategy, and customer service leadership. The award is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated unparalleled excellence within its industry.
Frost & Sullivan also presented Saft with the 2005 Technology Innovation Award in the world industrial secondary lithium battery markets based on its work with the Intensium ® telecom backup battery . This award is presented annually to the company that has demonstrated technological superiority within its industry and recognizes the ability to successfully develop and introduce new technologies to make significant product performance contributions to the industry.
“Following an exhaustive review process , this award is bestowed on the company that successfully develops a product that is believed to provide a unique set of benefits over existing products on the market,” said Dhiraj Ajmani, healthcare industry manager with Frost & Sullivan.
“As the world leader in the specialized battery market, we have an obligation to set the standard for technological innovation,” said John Searle, Saft’s president and CEO. “Receiving this award underscores our commitment to research and innovation.”
The two awards will be presented to Saft during the 2005 Excellence in Industrial Technologies Awards banquet, held today in Naples, Florida at the Registries Resort & Club.
Intensium is a 1U rack-mount lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery system for backup battery applications. The Li-Ion chemistry by virtue has a high energy and power density, lacks memory effect, and is also environment-friendly. Due to its high power density, fewer numbers of cells need to be used to supply a given amount of power, thereby drastically reducing the weight and also ensuring the device is of a compact footprint. Saft has adopted an extensive five-level redundant safety design for Intensium, so it can withstand abusive conditions that industrial batteries have to be subjected to constantly.
Leviton Manufacturing Helps Long Island Father Rebuild Dream of Homeownership after Family Tragedy
The Leviton Manufacturing Company, North America’s largest producer of electrical and electronic wiring devices , joined with a large number of corporate sponsors to help a young widower and his family on a special 2-hour “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” that aired last month on the ABC network. The poignant story of how a community rallied behind Suffolk County Police Officer John Vitale to carry out a promise he made with his wife to raise their family in a home the two planned to renovate propelled the small town of St. James, New York to national stardom.
Police Officer John Vitale’s wife, Anne Marie, succumbed to leukemia and was buried on what would have been her 29 th birthday. “Makeover” host Ty Pennington and other cast members were in tears as they watched a video of the late Anne Marie dancing at a girlfriend’s wedding only weeks before she lost her valiant battle with cancer. Officer Vitale and his three young boys had taken up residence with his in-laws after his wife's medical bills exhausted the family's savings. ABC sent Officer Vitale and his sons on a weeklong vacation to Park City, Utah to ski and relax. They returned home to find their home rebuilt from the ground up so that it was 2 ½ times its original size. The remodelled home was replete with a custom-tailored bedroom for each of his sons, a giant outdoor play area that included a castle and moat, a hidden-away relaxation room for Officer Vitale with a full bar located off the master bedroom, a giant bath with super-sized hot tub and other distinctive amenities.
“Watching the Long Island community mobilize to help this family in dire straits was a formidable experience for all of us at Leviton who participated on the project, said William Fodor, Director of Distribution Marketing for Leviton. “With such an extremely tight schedule and so many trades involved, you might expect the site to be tense and stressful but that was not at all the case. I have never before witnessed such an overwhelmingly positive work environment and spirit of cooperation, dedication and goodwill.”
Leviton contributed its structured cabling system to the Vitale’s new home, including the Leviton Decora® camera. Typically referred to as a “nanny cam,” the Decora camera makes it easy for Officer Vitale to monitor his children's whereabouts and activities from multiple locations throughout his home. The cameras were installed in four separate areas throughout the Vitales’ palatial 2,400 square foot home. The low-profile camera offers high-resolution CMOS-based color and features a precision 3.5mm wide-angle, fixed-focus, high-resolution lens that eliminates the need for constant readjustment – an important consideration in difficult-access locations. The wall-mounted camera is fitted with a Decora wallplate and blends with Leviton’s full line of Decora wiring devices and dimmers.
Other Leviton structured cabling system components installed in the Vitale's home included whole house phone, television and high speed Internet access with computer networking capabilities, as well as Leviton’s IllumaTech® dimmers and Decora receptacles and wallplates.
Fodor added, “You could see by the quality of the craftsmanship that everyone on the jobsite gave this family their best work. The level of fine detail built into this home is truly amazing, considering the project was competed in 5 days. Leviton was so pleased to participate in this project and be able to help give this young family a new beginning and stable home environment.”
