MGE UPS SYSTEMS Receives Accolades from Electrical Contracting Products for Product Innovation and Quality

MGE UPS SYSTEMS INC. recently announced that its Galaxy 4000 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and Power-Protected Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) midspan solution were selected as finalists in the power quality and voice-data-video (VDV) categories, respectively, for the Electrical Contracting Products 2005 INNOVATION Awards. The INNOVATION Awards honor outstanding companies whose products and services have best responded to electrical contractors’ market challenges.

“We’re honored that the electrical contracting community continues to recognize MGE for its innovative, easy to use and cost effective power solutions,” said MGE’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Mike Chmura. “These awards further underscore our commitment to delivering the highest quality products, such as the Galaxy 4000 UPS and PoE midspan, to meet customers’ needs across a wide range of power-critical applications including the special requirements of next generation infrastructure.”

MGE’s online double-conversion Galaxy 4000, available in power ratings of 40/50/65/75 kVA, is designed to meet the stringent power demands of critical data center and industrial facilities. Featuring Digital Power Quality Management for precision voltage regulation along with advanced IGBT technology that virtually eliminates damaging input harmonics, the Galaxy 4000 is able to greatly improve input power quality, which significantly increases reliability and reduces costs. The advanced features of the Galaxy 4000 allow for installation using smaller cabling and breakers as well as a low UPS-to-generator (1:1) sizing.

The first and only UPS vendor to offer a total power solution for converged networks, MGE combines a PoE midspan, a centralized UPS and monitoring software to ensure continuous power to remotely connected IP telephones, wireless LANs, access points and IP-powered video surveillance systems. The midspan and an extended runtime MGE UPS allows VoIP phones to realize up to “five nines” of reliability (99.999 percent), and overall quality of service (QoS) is greatly enhanced for the entire network. The 1U 24-port, 10/100 Mbps midspan is also available with a Web-based SNMP management option that remotely controls the midspan and gathers essential telemetry.

The winners of the 2005 INNOVATION Awards will be announced at an awards ceremony September 18, 2005 at the National Electrical Contractors Association’s (NECA) Show in New Orleans.

FCI Releases Results of Self Damping Tests on CTC Aluminum Composite Core Conductor

Test Results Make Way for Development of Line of Dampening Products around Conductor

FCI’s Electrical Product Interconnect Division (EPI), a subsidiary of AREVA, announces the results of a recent series of self damping tests on CTC Aluminum Conductor Composite Core (ACCC) Conductors. The tests were conducted at AREVA’s state-of-the-art, renowned testing facilities in Evreux, France.

The tests clearly demonstrate that ACCC has superior self damping characteristics as compared to the traditional steel center core supporting virtually all high-voltage transmission wires in the United States today. As a result, FCI-BURNDY Products is developing a line of connector, suspension, and vibration dampening products based around the ACCC conductor.

The first products to be released will be designed around the Drake conductor family, which is the most prevalent found in the aging American transmission infrastructure. Data developed during the testing will allow for the calculation of equipment and location of the hardware mounted on the transmission conductors. What’s more, reducing mechanical vibration from environmental conditions is expected to increase the transmission system reliability.

luke introduces comprehensive safety information program for electrical measurement

Program includes video, application notes, white paper and guidelines for safe measurement tools and procedures

Fluke has introduced a comprehensive, multi-part information program designed to help reduce hazards for people measuring electrical energy, and to help reduce risk and liability for employers.  The program is based on the most recent safety guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Electrotechnical Conference (IEC) and other leading safety organizations.

"Fluke has a strong commitment to safety, and we believe this program will help our customers complete their important work safely," said Larry Eccleston, product testing manager at Fluke and a member of the IEC Standards Committee.  "Electrical accidents can injure or kill.  People and their loved ones suffer, and the organizational cost in damaged morale, insurance claims and lost production can be huge.  Yet most accidents are preventable.  If this program saves just one person from injury or death, we will have achieved our goal."

Industry sources estimate that arc flash explosions serious enough to send victims to a special burn center occur in the US between five and ten times a day.  Voltage kickback spikes common in electrical systems can damage or destroy measurement tools and if these spikes occur during the measurement process they can trigger an arc flash.

Available for $250 from the Fluke website (www.fluke.com/safety), the Fluke electrical measurement safety program includes:

·         Safety Video -- This 25-minute video describes the hazards of electrical measurement and the precautions that can help defend against dangers including arc flash.

·         Model Safety Policy provides guidance for selecting test tools that meet current standards, protect users and help reduce liability for the organization.

·         Model Training Program includes ideas on measuring the effectiveness of a safety program.

·         Safety Application Notes - Each of these brief notes is designed to serve as the basis of a safety meeting discussion or as a chapter in the electrical safety reference library.  They cover such topics as "ABCs of Electrical Measurement Safety," "Think 'Test Instruments' When You Think of Personal Protective Equipment," "Are Your Test Tools Safety-Ready?" "10 Dumb Things Smart People Do When Testing Electricity," "Don't Risk CAT IV Areas Without the Right Leads," and "ABCs of Multimeter Safety".

·         Electrical Measurement Safety Presentation -- This PowerPoint presentation shows why measurement can be dangerous, and how to help avoid those hazards and work safely.

·         Electrical Measurement Safety White Paper provides an in-depth look at the safety standards that govern electrical measurement, explains the role transient voltage spikes play in creating arc flash hazards and provides guidance for choosing test tools.

·         Safety Resource List - Useful Internet resources to expand your safety understanding and enhance a safety program.

CLS Announces Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Efforts

CLS recently announced measures the company has taken to support the relief and rebuilding efforts in the area of the country ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. CLS has offered a fully paid, two-week leave of absence to all eligible employees (those who meet Red Cross screening requirements) who volunteer to complete the necessary training become a Red Cross Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) volunteer and serve a two-week assignment in the disaster area. To date, 15 CLS employees have applied for the DSHR effort. They will complete the required Red Cross two-day training program that includes basic first aid, CPR, and other disaster-services training, as well as an on-line training course, and subsequently be assigned to a two-week assignment. The Red Cross expects to be involved in disaster relief in the area for many months.

In addition, the Company is collecting employee donations to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief fund and will match all employee donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

“While I’m pleased to see so many people across the country reaching out to assist our fellow Americans in need, we in the Northeast are physically distant from the hurricane zone,” said Bob Compagna, president of CLS. “Many people want to do more, but are restricted by work and family obligations. At CLS we wanted to do our part to enable those of our employees who wish to give of their time, to do so without financial constraints. We believe it is the least we can do to show our support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.”
