E. O. Schweitzer Manufacturing, an SEL Company
Reducing Fault-Finding Time for Over Fifty Years

E. O. Schweitzer Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories since 2004, has manufactured fault indicators and related sensing devices for over 50 years. Today, SEL helps customers worldwide to reduce fault locating time by systematically installing fault indicators on electrical systems ranging from small commercial and industrial sites to the largest utilities in the world. In addition, SEL voltage sensors and split-core current transformers provide measurement solutions to a variety of industries, including such critical-load applications as hospitals, airports, and military installations.

Edmund O. Schweitzer Jr. created the Mundelein, Illinois company in order to manufacture his invention, the faulted circuit indicator. These first fault indicators provided a cost-effective means of identifying the location of line faults more quickly: the small target on the face of each indicator rotated from white to red when fault current passed through their sensors. As a result, the indicators installed on the power line before the fault displayed a red target; those installed on the line after the location of the fault remain in a white, untripped position.

55 years later, customers benefit from this same elegant solution, but with an abundance of models to choose from: underground or overhead application; LED or target indication; fixed or auto-adjusting trip level; with or without an auxiliary contact; and many other choices. Applications for these SEL products include hospitals, corrections facilities, mining operations, manufacturing facilities, airports, and more, in addition to utilities, municipalities, and co-ops.

At the end of 2005, E. O. Schweitzer Manufacturing will move to a larger facility in Lake Zurich, Illinois.
