Shermco Industries Takes Active Role in Developing Future Technicians and Engineers

Shermco executive vice president joins Department of Education Assistant Secretary Tom Luce in discussion on the importance of math and science education

In answer to the president’s recent call for increased emphasis on mathematics and science instruction in our schools, Ron Widup, executive vice president of Shermco Industries, joined Department of Education Assistant Secretary Tom Luce and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Commissioner Raymund Paredes in a roundtable discussion on the importance of these subjects to prepare students for jobs in the 21 st century.   The Summit on Education, held Monday at Texas State Technical College in Waco, Tex., also included parents, teachers, administrators and local business leaders.

“I’m honored to be part of such an important discussion,” Widup said.  “The future of Shermco and others represented at the Summit is dependant on talented employees who developed a passion for math and science at an early age.  We are dedicated to doing our part in the community to help mold our future technicians and engineers.”

During his State of the Union address, the President announced the American Competitiveness Initiative to improve math and science education and foster innovation in research and development.   In addition to his pledge of $5.9 billion in FY 2007 and $136 billion over the next 10 years for research, development and improved math and science education, the initiative asks leaders of the private sector to take an active role in preparing students for future jobs.
