Leviton Teams with Microsoft to Deliver Windows® Compatible
Wireless Home Automation Solutions
Leviton has joined forces with software giant Microsoft Corporation to offer homeowners a way to remotely control lighting and other Z-Wave® enabled home automation schemes using any number of popular consumer electronic products. The relationship also offers software developers a fast, easy way to design Z-Wave based home control applications for these devices using Microsoft’s .Net Micro Framework, a rich application development environment that speeds programming of Microsoft Windows®-supported home control programs. Leveraging the power of Microsoft’s Visual Studio ® 2005 and SQL Server ® 2005, software developers, home installers, system integrators, and technology-savvy home automation enthusiasts can develop software interfaces for cell-phones, PDAs, and the Internet to remotely control Z-Wave home networks -- with little or no programming.
Bridging the Microsoft/Leviton connection is the industry’s first Z-Wave-compliant Ethernet gateway, the Vizia RF™ Foyer from Leviton. Available during the second quarter of this year, the Vizia RF Foyer will connect to a PC or laptop Ethernet port and transmit signals to a Z-Wave home control network. The Z-Wave “mesh” topology from Zensys overcomes the performance issues and high cost of earlier generations of wireless home control systems. Each module is equipped with a two-way radio frequency (RF) activated chip. Z-Wave command signals travel from module to module or “node” to “node” along the network to their final destination. If any form of interference blocks the signal along the way (a wall, or a large appliance like a refrigerator), the signal is automatically rerouted through other modules or “nodes,”until it succeeds in reaching its destination. This ingenious, “self-healing” feature of the Z-Wave mesh network makes it so reliable.
The Vizia RF Foyer Ethernet Gateway expands the functionality of Leviton’s Vizia RF line of devices, which includes digital dimmers and switches, along with a full-function scene controller, zone-controller, appliance and lamp modules and remote controls. These devices can be installed as a single, stand-alone lighting control network or as part of Z-Wave's larger “intelligent” network of HVAC, access, intruder, fire detection, and appliance controls, as well as other home systems.
Professional system integrators can utilize Microsoft’s rapid development framework for a wide range of Z-Wave based home control solutions, including energy management, security and access control, climate control, irrigation, shade and blind controls and security system integration. Microsoft’s Coding4Fun Developer Center located at www.Coding4Fun.net will also provide hobbyists, homeowners and professional installers with a variety of projects they can customize in their homes. Lee Technologies Awarded Major Contract for CyrusOne's Houston Data Center Expansion
New data center to be the most advanced IT facility in Houston
Lee Technologies, Inc. recently announced that CyrusOne, Houston's largest IT services and collocation company, has selected Lee Technologies to build-out the expansion of its 60,000-square-foot Tier 4 enterprise data center. Located within CyrusOne's technology campus, the new high-density facility is designed from the ground-up to provide 250 watts of power per square-foot to support the demands of the power-hungry blade servers.
"We're proud to be chosen as a key strategic asset to CyrusOne in building the expansion of their state-of-the-art enterprise data center," said George Newstrom, president and COO of Lee Technologies. "This win epitomizes our core strategic growth initiatives of aggressively expanding our business outside of the Mid-Atlantic region and offering a robust set of value-added services to continually meet our customers' business objectives, while further validating our strength and expertise in delivering end-to-end infrastructure solutions for mission-critical facilities nationwide. Our infrastructure experts in Houston will ensure that CyrusOne's power systems are of the highest caliber to mitigate any unforeseen power anomalies and to keep the data center fully operational 24x7x365 no matter the weather, state of the electricity grid, or even human error."
"The increased demand for high availability and dense computing enterprise data centers has never been stronger. This is due mainly to the low upfront ownership, advanced capacity in storage and flexibility of adding components to blade servers," said Dave Ferdman, president and CEO, CyrusOne. "Our new data center is a major step in our commitment to provide customers with scalable, cost-effective, forward-looking solutions. We're very pleased that we have Lee Technologies' expertise to design and build the critical electrical infrastructure of our new center."
According to Nemertes Research, companies are finding they need to bring in more servers to support a growing demand; however this effects power, heat and cooling - issues that are becoming increasingly important in designing today's data centers.
"This is a very exciting project. We're essentially taking a warehouse and converting it to one of the most sophisticated data centers in Houston," said Project Design Engineer, Chuck Prichard, president and owner of Prichard Consulting. "Over 35,000 volts of power will be delivered to the site to meet capacity requirements. However, the proper integration, installation and ongoing maintenance of the site's critical systems are the key elements that will drive the project's success. I am very pleased to work with the experts at Lee Technologies to help ensure that CyrusOne's clients' uptime demands are met."

How Savvy Contractors Boost Their Estimating Productivity
Contractors who use software from McCormick Systems to estimate and manage electrical and automated building systems projects will gather April 18-21 in Phoenix, AZ for the company's annual User's Conference.
This year's renewal will be the 25th annual. The event includes two full days of meetings plus access to an on-site computer "lab." Users can use the lab to try out ideas they hear during the conference, with or without help from McCormick staff.
"Our customers tell us they want to be able to do more estimates, faster, and more accurately, with the same resources – in terms of people and equipment," says Todd McCormick, the company president. "Our agenda this year primarily focuses on those concerns."
An additional agenda item is a popular annual segment, "What You Have On Your Computer That You Aren't Using." Many elements included as "standard" items in the estimating software can be overlooked by contractors, including:
- Options for keeping pricing current;
- Project Documentation;
- Accessing your estimating system remotely; and
- An abundance of information on Estimating.

Sea Gull Lighting Joins This Old House® to Help Renovate
Two-Family East Boston Home
Sea Gull Lighting Products, LLC recently joined the Emmy Award-winning “This Old House” to help renovate a nearly 100-year-old, two-family home in East Boston, Mass. as part of the show’s latest TV project airing on PBS. The original home improvement series, which regularly features top-to-bottom renovations on historic homes, this time chose the revamp of a two-family owned by two generations of women in the same family.
Built in 1916, the home had fallen into disrepair and required the remodel of two separate living spaces including two bathrooms, two kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and a home office. The trick was redoing each living space in entirely different styles to accommodate the personal tastes of both homeowners.
“The two women who own this home had widely varying ideas for what they wanted accomplished,” said Lisey Good, owner and founder of Boston’s Good Interiors and the designer of much of the home’s remodel. “First-floor owner Liz Bagley wanted an urban, lofty feel to her space, while Chris Flynn wanted to take advantage of the nearby view of the water with a ‘cottage by the sea’ theme in her second-floor unit.”
To fulfill the requirements of both homeowners, an assortment of track, rail and recessed lighting, ceiling fans, chandeliers, outdoor lanterns, pendants, ceiling lights and hall/foyers fixtures were chosen from several popular Sea Gull Lighting collections including Pemberton, Sussex, Stockholm, Pemberton, Windsor Manor, Metropolis and the company’s Ambiance® Lighting Systems.
“Choosing the improper lighting is a common mistake that can greatly detract from the overall effect of even the most beautifully designed projects,” says Good.
“The lighting chosen for the “This Old House” East Boston project was essential for furthering the ambiance, while ensuring functionality to each area of the home,” added Kathy Marshall, owner of K Marshall Design Inc. in Wenham, Ma. and the kitchen designer, who redesigned all the kitchens and baths for the East Boston “This Old House” project.
Rounding out the experience in each kitchen and bath was also the choice of close to ceiling lighting, pendants and recessed lighting to easily achieve layered lighting effects, as well as the use of Xenon under-cabinet lighting from Ambiance® Lighting Systems, another extremely popular brand from Sea Gull Lighting.
“It was important to create drama, but also necessary to make sure these work places facilitated the easy accomplishment of tasks,” further explained Marshall. “The under cabinet lighting and other fixtures allowed us to highlight certain areas while generating separate veils of light to accommodate the mood of any affair or occasion.
Eighteen episodes featuring the “This Old House” East Boston transformation are currently airing on PBS. For air dates and times in your area, please visit thisoldhouse.com/tvschedule or your local listings.
