These aren’t your Dad’s meters anymore.
Gone are the days of trying to
decide which functions or features you
want in your multimeter. Enter a product
line that offers complete functionality,
problem solving innovation, and
increased safety.
UEi, an Oregon based company, entered
the test and measurement market
place 40 years ago and quickly
gained a strong foothold as a manufacture
of testing equipment. While the
Company prospered it found its position
in the middle of the market left little
room to grow. At the turn of a new
millennium a new management team
was convinced there was a gap in the
market that UEi was ideally suited to
fill. UEi sought advice from their customers
and quickly developed a wish
list from technicians, tech schools, and
training centers and based on this information
UEi began redesigning its
core product line from the ground up.
The result would be a professional
line of three clamp meters appropriately
named, “The Phoenix Clamp Meter
Series™”. Designed to replace the
previously popular clamp meters, each
of the three meters includes professional
functions to serve specific job
applications and contain a surprising
combination of features not found in
the market today. In spite of this comprehensive
list of features, the Phoenix
wasn’t complete.
“When we sat down to design the
Phoenix series,” explains President
Michael Kane, “we listened carefully to
our customers to make sure we understood
how contractor’s tools play such
a critical role in helping them serve
their customers, what challenges are
experienced in the work environment,
and where concerns for safety can be
improved.”
What UEi found was another opportunity
to solve an industry-leading
problem. Bruce Baker, UEi’s Nation
Field Sales Manager clarifies, “A common
problem all contractors have
faced at some time is the difficulty
to take current measurements
in tight and cramped work
environments. To take a current
reading on an individual wire
meant someone was going to use
their fingers, sort the wires, pull
the wire in question out and take
a clamp reading. This has
brought two big problems, first:
reaching in and opening the
clamp has either been impossible,
or undesirable due to the
hazards associated with live contact
points. Second: every time
you pull a wire in a tight location,
you risk damaging or loosening
the wire’s connections.”
In the past, solutions within the
industry have focused on developing
a smaller or thinner meter. However
the size limitations hindered
function ranges and safety. UEi took a
different approach. One common feature
shared among Phoenix Clamp
Meters is the detachable clamp head,
which allows contractors to swap the
traditional clamp head with a revolutionary
new Hook. The long slim Hook
snaps onto the top of the Phoenix meter
body extending measurement capabilities
into tight spaces or wire
bundles. Reaching into wire bundles is
not only easy, now it’s reliable. The
Hook’s patent pending technology significantly
reduces the interference from
current on adjacent wires by providing
a virtual closed core around the hook,
which increases accuracy. The Hook
works exclusively on the Phoenix
Clamp Meter Series and features a
built-in worklight to illuminate dark environments.
This provides contractors
a new, safe and unique approach to
measuring wires in these conditions.
All three UL approved Phoenix
Clamp Meters include professional
functions such as AC/DC Volts and
Amps, Micro-Amps, Resistance, Capacitance,
Frequency, Duty Cycle,
built-in worklight, magnetic mount, test
lead holder, test lead storage, wire
sorting tip, backlit display and a threeyear
limited warranty. The Phoenix II &
III also feature Temperature, Non-Contact
Voltage, and a Dual Display, while
Phoenix III encompasses all those features
plus True RMS for accuracy.
Now technicians have the capability
to measure motor or line current,
supply or control voltage, system
board voltage checks, flame safe
guard, motor run or start faults, circuit
continuity or specified resistance,
motor in-rush, frequency of variable
speed drives & supply power, temperature,
quick check of live wires,
two readings simultaneously, non-linear
loads or distorted waveforms and
AC current in tight or cramped
spaces with one meter. Whether
you’re new to the trade or a seasoned
professional, the Phoenix delivers a
complete combination of features,
real world solutions, and unmatched
safety to help technicians work more
efficiently at any level. Again expectations
have risen, and this time it’s
in the form of a Phoenix.
