Watt Stopper/Legrand’s New Card Key Switches Help Hotels Keep Guestroom Lights off When Room is Vacant

Watt Stopper/Legrand has developed a line of card key switches for hospitality facilities which help hotels stop the energy waste of guestroom lighting being left on when no one is present. The only products of its kind in the U.S., these switches comply with IECC and ASHRAE/IESNA energy codes which require that hotel guestrooms have a master switch at the entrance of every room.

Lights being left on in hotel guestrooms when the rooms are left vacant is a common problem and great source of energy waste. The HS series switches enable or disable power to a select number of electric circuits and loads present inside a guestroom, eliminating the potential for this waste. The low voltage HS-100 has normally open and normally closed isolated relays that allow it to interface with third party energy management and/or lighting management control systems, as well as with Watt Stopper power packs. The HS-150 is a line voltage switch that will serve as a primary or master switch at the guestroom’s entrance.

A common application for these card key switches is to allow them to collectively control all permanently installed luminaries and switched receptacles in a hotel guest room, except those in the bathroom(s) if so required by code. Operation is simple and convenient: when a hotel door entry card-key (or the key fob HS-FOB) is inserted in the HS-100/HS-150’s card slot, the controlled circuits are energized. When the hotel door entry card-key (or HS-FOB) is removed, the controlled circuits will remain energized for 30 seconds more to allow safe egress from the hotel room. After this time delay elapses, they will be de-energized. To restore power to the room (that is, to the controlled circuits and loads), the occupant will need to reinsert the hotel card-key into the HS-100/HS-150 card slot.

Time Switches Designed for Residential Use Provide New Easy-to-use Control Option

Watt Stopper/Legrand premieres the RT Series Time Switches as part of its new line of energy saving residential lighting controls to offer homeowners a full range of green, attractive and reliable control solutions. The timers replace standard light switches and can control either lighting or motor loads such as fans. Users turn the switch on by pressing the ON/OFF button. The switch turns the load off at the end of the timer’s countdown unless the user has chosen to turn it off earlier. The ON/OFF button is illuminated when the switch is off for easy location in darkened rooms.

Two timer models provide different options, while maintaining a coordinated look and feel consistent with Watt Stopper/Legrand’s family of low profile, decorator style residential products. One model offers a choice of six easy-to-select factory-preset time delays: one, five, 10, 20, 30 or 60 minutes. The other is user-programmable in increments from five minutes to 12 hours and includes more advanced feedback and warnings. All control and programming is accomplished with digital pushbuttons and is quick and intuitive. No rotary switches are used and the timer is not audible.

Time switches help homeowners take charge of their energy usage and are the ideal solution for many applications that are not appropriate for control by occupancy sensors, either because of switch location, room configuration or the use of the space. Areas that require lighting for limited periods of time and do not attract notice when the lighting is inadvertently left on, such as closets, pantries, garages, laundry rooms, utility rooms and storage areas, are excellent candidates for time-based control. Outdoor lighting and spas may be controlled by time switches, so homeowners can enjoy green control solutions throughout their properties.

Watt Stopper/Legrand’s RT Series Time Switches are designed and manufactured for reliability. Like all of the company’s controls, they are backed by a five-year warranty.

New Feature Enables Easy Scalability from 20kVA to 90kVA

APC-MGE, a global leader in critical power and cooling services, today announced that its popular MGE Galaxy 3000 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) 20kVA and 30kVA models now offer a flexible new paralleling capability to enable scalability for increased capacity or redundancy. The new solution, which can boost capacity from 20kVA up to 90kVA, allows IT and facilities managers to respond to increasing demands placed on power infrastructure in growing facilities.

"The widespread use of blade servers and similar flexible architectures requires adaptable solutions to address critical power needs," explained Christian Corsin, senior vice president, Enterprise & Systems, APC-MGE. "By adding paralleling capabilities to the Galaxy systems, we are providing our customers with a very cost effective means to meet these needs, while redundancy options assure the highest level of power protection."

The online, three-phase Galaxy UPS series offers scalable power protection using innovative ultra high availability topology to protect all critical loads. Standalone systems are available with 10kVA and 15kVA power ratings, while the 20kVA and 30kVA models feature the new parallel functionality for scalable installations in a modular configuration. Each 30kVA module can support up to 40 network servers while delivering the same 24x7 reliability previously found in larger, more costly UPS systems.

Relying on advanced inverter technology to restrict total harmonic distortion to less than 3 percent, the online Galaxy 3000 delivers clean reliable power even in the harshest of electrical environments. A 100-percent step-load capability ensures a fast response to load changes with accurate voltage regulation. In addition, the Galaxy 3000 incorporates fault tolerant circuitry that protects the UPS from accidental short circuits usually caused by incorrect wiring.

Energy shortages and increasing power demands require full generator compatibility for many critical installations. To meet this requirement, the Galaxy 3000's distortion-free power factor corrected input boasts the industry's best generator compatibility that improves efficiency and eliminates the need to significantly oversize connected generators for reliable operation with the UPS.

The versatile Galaxy 3000 UPS interfaces with the industry's leading universal communication protocols and incorporates four communication slots to support SNMP, J-Bus/ModBus and (RS232-RS485) protocols for easy interfacing with most devices. With its integrated Solution-Pac power management software, the Galaxy 3000 can monitor and gracefully control and shut down multiple servers over a network, while free MGE UPS Web-Pac software enables remote monitoring via the Internet. For technical support, MGE's 7X24 RemotePowerMonitoring(tm) is available for rapid notification of any power quality issues for centralized protection of multi-server sites. A 100-percent front accessible design makes the Galaxy 3000 not only easy to install, but also easy to maintain with a low mean time to repair (MTTR).
